AI discoverability in Kansas City. Does AI pick your business?
Lefty Media Co is an AI discoverability company and Kansas City GEO (generative engine optimization) agency, working nationwide. We get businesses recognized by AI engines like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, and recommended when people ask those engines who’s best.
Some call this GEO, AEO, AIO, or AI SEO. Business owners don’t have time to learn what those mean. They want one answer: does AI pick me or not. We call it Pick Rate.
What is AI discoverability?
AI discoverability is the work of making sure your business is the name an AI engine says when someone asks it a question. When someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity “who’s the best in Kansas City for what I do,” AI gives them an answer. Most Kansas City businesses are not in that answer and have no idea. Lefty Media Co measures whether you are, and fixes what keeps you out.
What is GEO?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. GEO is the market’s name for getting a business into the answers AI engines give. Lefty Media Co splits GEO into two questions that can be measured separately.
Recognition is whether AI knows a business exists: its name, what it does, where it is, that it is real.
Pick Rate is whether AI picks that business when someone asks who is best.
The two move independently. A business can score 100 on Recognition and 1 on Pick Rate, which means AI knows exactly who it is and still sends the customer somewhere else. How we measure both.
GEO, AEO, AIO, AI SEO: four names, two questions
GEO (generative engine optimization) is the name for getting a business into the answers that generative AI engines write.
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the name for getting a business into the direct answer an engine gives: one answer instead of ten links.
AIO (AI optimization) is the catch-all some agencies use for both.
AI SEO is what the search industry calls it when it wants to keep the old word.
They are four names for the same two questions. Recognition: does AI know who you are. Pick Rate: does AI pick you when someone asks who is best. Lefty Media Co measures both, in Kansas City and nationwide, and calls the one that brings in customers Pick Rate.
How AI decides who to recommend in Kansas City
It searches first
When someone asks an AI engine who to hire in Kansas City, the engine does not answer from memory. It searches, opens five or six web pages, and names whoever is on them. The same pages, every engine, almost every day.
17 of 17 versus 1 of 6
When an AI engine opened a client’s own website while answering, it described that business correctly 17 times out of 17. When it never opened the site, it was correct 1 time out of 6. Measured August 19, 2026, across 23 grounded probes and eight businesses. No overlap between the two groups.
Pick Rate is won on the page
Words on your own site that match the question, and other places on the web saying your name the same way. That is the whole mechanism, and it is the whole job.
What AI says when you ask if we are reputable
We ask the engines about ourselves with the same instrument we use for clients. In September 2026, asked whether Lefty Media Co is reputable, Claude answered:
“Their website demonstrates transparency, openly stating they don’t guarantee specific AI rankings (since no one controls the algorithms), which is an honest and trustworthy position.”
“Founded by Nathan Hall, who appears to be an active and visible figure in the Kansas City business and tech community.”
Both answers also said to ask us for measurable results before committing. Fair. They are below, and they stay on this page whether they move up or down.
Measurable results, published as we go
Nine websites, 30 days
Across the nine websites Lefty Media Co measures, in the 30 days ending September 19, 2026: 7,352 AI answers were read. AI recognized the business in 85% of the questions we asked (891 of 1,054). AI recommended the business in 26% of the answers (1,945 of 7,352). The spread is the story: a fitness business is picked 70% of the time, a property services company is picked 0% of the time, and both are told the number every month.
Lefty Media Co, same instrument
Same window, same questions: recognized 96% of the time (115 of 120). Picked 1% of the time (9 of 786). This page is part of the fix. The next number will be published here whether it moves or not.
From our published research
When a file was announced to AI crawlers through robots.txt, verified crawlers fetched it 1,549 times across six websites in 165 site-days, 9.4 fetches per site-day. The same file left un-announced at the site root was fetched twice. Hall, N. (2026), Discovery, not adoption, Zenodo.
Every number on this page carries its date and its denominator. Case studies by industry are added as clients approve them.
What we do
Discover Me is the monthly AI discoverability service from Lefty Media Co. Every month we ask ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity the same questions your customers ask, record who gets recommended, and fix what is keeping you out of the answer. You get the actual questions, the actual answers, and what changed since last month.
Build. Your site and its structure made readable to AI, so the machine-readable version of your business always matches the real one.
Track. Every cycle we ask the engines about your business and record what they say, per engine, per question.
Report. Where you are surfacing, where you are not, what moved, and a real human Guide reading every number, because a score can lie and a Guide can feel it.
Three tiers, set by how much access we have to your site. Month to month, 30 days notice, no lock-in. Discover Me.
How long it takes
Most clients see AI recognition move within 30 to 60 days. Recommendations take longer, because Pick Rate depends on what other sites say about you, not just your own. We show the raw numbers every month either way, including the months nothing moves.
Who this is for
Lefty Media Co works with owner-run businesses in Kansas City that already do good work and are not showing up when someone asks AI who to hire. Delivery companies, contractors, venues, professional services. We are based in Kansas City, Missouri, and work with clients coast to coast. The measurement is the same everywhere.
Why Lefty
Lefty Media Co was founded by Nathan Hall in Kansas City, Missouri. He built websites for years before AI assistants started answering the questions people used to type into Google, and he watched good businesses disappear from those answers with no idea it was happening. Nobody was measuring it, so nobody could fix it. So we started measuring it.
We coined Pick Rate. We test it on our own websites first, with the predictions written down before the data comes in, and the results are published as research under Nathan Hall’s ORCID. No black box: every move we make has a name and you watch it happen. No guarantees: nobody owns the algorithms, and anyone who promises you a number is guessing. What we promise is the work, and the truth about what it turns up.
Questions Kansas City business owners ask
How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Be on the pages ChatGPT opens when it searches your question, and say the same true things about your business everywhere it looks. That is the short version. The long version is Discover Me, our monthly AI discoverability service.
How do AI tools decide which businesses to recommend?
AI engines search, open a handful of web pages, and name the businesses on them. Recognition is whether they know you exist. Pick Rate is whether they pick you. Lefty Media Co measures both, every month, per engine.
What is the difference between GEO, AEO, and AIO?
They are three names for the same work: getting a business into the answers AI engines give. GEO is generative engine optimization, AEO is answer engine optimization, AIO is AI optimization. Lefty Media Co measures all of it as two questions, Recognition (does AI know you) and Pick Rate (does AI pick you).
Is AI discoverability just SEO with a new name?
No. SEO is about ranking on a page of blue links. AI discoverability is about what an AI engine says when someone asks a question and gets one answer back. Most of our clients keep their SEO alongside Discover Me.
Do you guarantee my business will be number one on ChatGPT?
No, and you should be careful with anyone who does. AI changes constantly and nobody owns the algorithms. What Lefty Media Co guarantees is the work and the numbers, published every month.
Do I need a new website for AI discoverability?
Usually not. Most of the work happens on the structure and signals behind your existing site.
How long does AI discoverability take to work?
Most clients see AI recognition move within 30 to 60 days. Recommendations take longer because they depend on what other sites say about you. We report the numbers every month either way.
Do you only work with Kansas City businesses?
Kansas City is home. Lefty Media Co works with clients coast to coast, and the measurement is the same everywhere.
